Our Art Cafe is a self-guided painting experience where you can choose from more than 30 unique wood cutout projects, all hand-carved by local artist Shelly Drews. Whether you're visiting Traverse City, planning a family outing, meeting up with friends, or just looking for a relaxing creative activity, our Art Cafe is designed for all ages and skill levels.
How It Works
1. Reserve a table or stop by and see if we have space available
During our busy season, reservations are recommended, but we always welcome walk-ins when space allows.
2. Choose your project
Browse our collection of hand-carved wood art projects, including fish, bears, dogs, cats, seasonal designs, and more.
3. Paint and create
We'll provide everything you need, including paints, brushes, aprons, palettes, and hair dryers for quick drying. Just pick your colors and start creating!
What Makes Our Art Cafe Different?
At our Art Cafe, we serve art, not food. You're welcome to bring a drink along while you paint. Grab a coffee, smoothie, or tea from Cuppa Joe downstairs, or stop by Higher Grounds Coffee for a locally roasted cold brew (my personal favorite!) before your painting session.
Things to Know Before You Visit
Most guests spend about 60–90 minutes painting.
No artistic experience is necessary.
Our Art Cafe is a self-guided painting experience, so you can work at your own pace and make your project uniquely yours.
We’re always happy to share painting tips and tricks if you'd like a little extra guidance.
Projects are available for both kids (12+) and adults, making this one of our favorite family-friendly activities in Traverse City.
You can take your project home with you when you finish painting it! Just be sure to use the hairdryer to dry it!

Please note that project selection will vary from what is pictured. Every wood cutout is individually hand-carved by Shelly, and because we're always creating new designs and selling out of others, our Art Cafe project selection is constantly changing. There's always something new to discover!
