Spend a day at the Historic Barns Park in Traverse City
If you’re planning a trip to Traverse City, be sure to add The Grand Traverse Commons to your list. I recommend starting your day at the Historic Barns Park, where you can explore beautifully landscaped grounds, walking trails, and the brand-new Children’s Sensory Garden. If you really wanna make a morning of it, grab a pastry and a coffee from Commons Grounds on 14th Street on your way over to The Commons.
View of the famous Historic Cathedral Barn from the Children’s Sensory Garden
Historic Barns Park is located less than a mile from Building 50 at the Grand Traverse Commons. If you're entering the grounds from Silver Lake Road, you'll pass right by the park, making it the perfect place to start your day.
The Children's Sensory Garden is a wonderful spot to let little ones explore, play, and burn off some energy before heading over to the shops and restaurants at the Commons. Visitors can enjoy winding walking paths, the community garden, and an additional children's garden tucked behind the Visitor Center and Gift Shop. There are many hiking trails located behind the historic barns that meander through the woods and offer beautiful views of Traverse City.

When you’re ready for a break from the sun, head over to Building 50 and stop by our art gallery. Laughing Fish Gallery features colorful, locally made artwork by mother-and-daughter artists Shelly and Kirstie Drews, including original paintings, prints, wooden fish, and handmade gifts inspired by Northern Michigan.
We also offer more than 30 unique wood cut-out art projects that are perfect for kids, families, and creative visitors of all ages. Reserve a table in our Art Café to paint your project right inside the gallery, or take your supplies to go and create at your own pace.
Enjoy our happy little art gallery, located in Traverse City at the Grand Traverse Commons. Take the stairs or elevator by Pepe Nero to the 2nd floor and you’ll find us right new to Kirkbride Hall.
